GOSHEN, Ind. (March 10, 2014) – Education loans and scholarships for aspiring medical professionals are now more readily available thanks to a $1 million gift from the Ned and Agda Farber estate. The gift is transformational in that it will promote area students to enter medical fields and return to the area to fill much-needed primary care, physical therapy and other specialty medical field positions where staffing shortages currently exist and are projected to increase over the coming years.
“We are very pleased to accept this generous gift from the estate of the late Ned and Agda Farber on behalf of every man, woman and child in the greater Goshen community,” said Lynette Mischel, Executive Director/CEO of the Goshen Hospital & Health Care Foundation. “The Farber Education Fund will serve as a lasting legacy to the community they loved so much. It will be used precisely as Ned and Agda intended–to assist and encourage young men and women from the Elkhart and greater Goshen communities to pursue careers in medicine even when cost of the education to do so may seem financially overwhelming.”
Ned and Agda attended Goshen High School and later married in 1945. Other than two years that Ned served in the United States military during the Korean conflict, the couple spent their entire lives in the Goshen area. “They never had their own children,” said Tim Yoder, President of the board of directors of the Goshen Hospital & Health Care Foundation. “This was the place they cared about most. I think their generous and thoughtful gift says it all.”
Ned worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1948 to 1976. Agda worked at First Federal Savings & Loan and later Tower Savings & Loan for a length of time. They were members of First United Methodist Church and were active in community philanthropic efforts. “They lived a very humble life,” added Mischel. “Their magnificent gift to the community is something they wanted to do so they could help make it a better place for everyone else–forever. It's an incredible story. We will never forget them.”
