East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland is detailing a $22 million plan to beef up the city's aging infrastructure. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report some of the work could begin next month and will include road, sewer and water line replacements as well as blighted building demolition. During a presentation to the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce Wednesday, he said much of the funding is from gaming revenues.

The money was freed up from major budget cuts undertaken by the city, including reducing city staffing levels from more than 750 to 523.

Copeland says the city's motto in 2014 is “Build, baby, build.”

The Mayor could announce additional economic development during his State of the City address scheduled for the end of next month.
