Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc. (NYSE: WLP) is parting ways with Chief Public Affairs Officer John Cannon. He served as chief executive officer on an interim basis prior to the hiring of current CEO Joe Swedish. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the health benefits company says Cannon will stay on until early next month to help with the transition of his duties.

He has been with WellPoint since 2007 and also served as executive vice president and general counsel.

Cannon's duties included overseeing legal strategy and compliance, government affairs and the WellPoint Foundation.
