The Indiana University School of Medicine is expanding its program in Muncie to four years. The center, which is based at Ball State University, is the last of the school's eight education centers to offer four years of training. The medical school began expanding programs at its statewide centers in 2008. It began with the South Bend campus, followed by Northwest and Fort Wayne campuses the following year, Terre Haute in 2010, Lafayette and Bloomington in 2013 and Evansville last year.

IU School of Medicine has offered training at the centers since the early 1970s.

The expansion will mean students in their third and fourth years can do rotations at IU Ball Memorial Hospital and with other doctors in the Delaware County area.

IU School of Medicine Media Manager Mary Hardin tells Inside INdiana Business the additional training opportunities will help the school graduate more physicians that can practice in rural and other under-served areas.

She adds that research indicates doctors often stay in the communities where they were trained.
