State Senator Mike Delph (R-29) is promoting a last-ditch effort to restore language involving domestic partner benefits and civil unions in a proposed amendment to further define marriage in the Indiana Constitution. The Republican is calling on the Senate to return the measure to second reading in hopes of re-inserting the phrasing.

Delph said last week the language was “officially dead” for this session because there was not enough support to restore it. He and State Senator Dennis Kruse (R-14) filed amendments Thursday to revive the phrasing.

Delph says he will not support the resolution in its current form, calling it too “watered down” to stand up to legal challenges.

If the proposal passed with the language removed, it could not go to a public vote until 2016.
