Two state senators have filed amendments to restore language involving domestic partner benefits and civil unions to a proposal to further define marriage in the Indiana Constitution. Republicans Mike Delph (R-29) and Dennis Kruse (R-14) hope to restore the phrasing that was removed in the version of the resolution passed by the Indiana House and the Senate Rules and Legislative Procedure Committee. The full Senate is scheduled to take up the issue this afternoon. If approved in its original form, the matter would go before voters in November.

If the proposal passed with the language removed, it would have to be approved again during the next legislative session before going to a public vote.

Supporters say voters should be allowed to decide the matter, while many opponents believe the amendment would stifle job creation and talent attraction in the state.
