VINCENNES, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) today awarded $86 million in federal transportation funding to rural cities, towns and counties, including $47 million in road construction, $22 million in bridge construction and $14 million in bicycle and pedestrian projects. Area projects include: Three bridge projects in Pike County, connector road in Santa Claus, road reconstruction on State Street in Mount Vernon, new sign installation in the City of Huntingburg, Knox, Crawford and Sullivan counties and trail projects in Mount Vernon and Santa Claus.
Troy Woodruff, INDOT Chief-of-Staff, was in Daviess County today to announce the award of an additional $11.6 million for continuation of the Cannelburg Road project. This project is critical for Daviess County to make travel safer for the local Amish community along this busy economic corridor.
INDOT programs 25 percent of its federal highway appropriation each year to fund larger local transportation projects. Metropolitan Planning Organizations distribute federal highway funds to local communities within the state's larger urbanized areas while INDOT distributes such funds outside MPO areas. To receive federal funding, typically communities must pay 20 percent in local matching funds.
Awarded rural projects would be designed, developed and have purchased land according to federal standards prior to bid during the state fiscal year beginning July 2016. Applications were due Friday, Dec. 13. In the near future, INDOT plans to issue a call for applications for rural local projects that would be bid during the state fiscal year beginning July 2017.
