House Approves Altered Marriage Amendment
An amended version of a proposal to further define marriage in the state Constitution has passed the Indiana House. The state Senate could restore language involving civil unions and domestic partner benefits that was removed by members of the House. Supporters argue the measure should be sent to Hoosier voters, while opponents contend it sends the wrong message to potential work force talent.
House members voted Monday to remove language that could have banned civil unions or eliminated domestic partner benefits.
If that language is restored by the Senate and then passed by the House, the measure could go to voters in November.
If the revised version is approved during this legislative session, a referendum on the issue could not take place until 2016.
