Governor Prepares For State of The State

Posted: Updated:

Governor Mike Pence is expected to touch on several key economic issues this evening during his second State of the State address. That includes a proposal to cut the state's business personal property tax. Our partners at WTHR-TV in Indianapolis report the governor may use part of the presentation to appeal to members of the General Assembly who oppose his plan. Some key members of Pence's own Republican Party, including House Speaker Brian Bosma, think counties should be able to decide to accept the proposed cut. Bosma says an optional tax would add "another tool" to a community's job creation tool box.

Opponents of the measure, such as House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath, say it would burden cash-strapped communities. Some estimate eliminating the tax would remove $1 billion in revenues from local coffers throughout the state.

Other issues that could receive attention include job creation and education.
