The chairman of the Indiana House Judiciary Committee believes members need more time to go through three hours of testimony on the proposed amendment to the state Constitution that would further define marriage. That is why State Representative Greg Steuerwald (R-40) has postponed a vote on the proposal. Lawmakers heard the testimony Monday. Supporters want the issue to be put directly to voters, while opponents believe the measure could prevent employers in the state from attracting top talent. Our partners at Network Indiana/WIBC report a vote is expected at the next committee meeting. A formal date for that session has not been posted.

The House Judiciary Committee heard testimony Monday from employers including Indiana University and Columbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI), which oppose the proposal.

State Representative Eric Turner (R-32) authored the amendment. He says many states that have approved a similar amendment still have positive economic development numbers. Opponents say the proposal would write inequality into the state's Constitution and make it difficult for businesses and universities to attract and retain top talent.

If the committee passes the proposal, it would head to the House floor for a vote.
