A college basketball tournament in Evansville has renewed its title sponsorship agreement. Deaconess will once again be the marquess partner of The Great Lakes Valley Conference in March. January 13, 2014

News Release

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced today that Deaconess, a tri-state community health care provider, has renewed its title sponsorship of the 2014 Deaconess GLVC Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Tournaments. The announcement was made Thursday in Evansville, Ind., at the Ford Center – site of the 2014 tournaments, March 6-9.

Deaconess, which includes Deaconess Hospital, The Heart Hospital, and The Women's Hospital, partnered with the GLVC and the Evansville Sports Corporation for last season's return of postseason basketball to the Evansville community. The 2013 events saw Lewis University earn the women's title and Drury University defeat the University of Southern Indiana for the men's crown. Just weeks later, Drury captured the NCAA Division II National Championship after advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight, which this year will also take place at the Ford Center.

“We are thrilled to have Deaconess back on board as title sponsor of the Deaconess GLVC Basketball Championship Tournaments,” said GLVC Commissioner Jim Naumovich. “The quality of these two tournaments extends beyond the competition on the court, as the ancillary events such as the GLVC Youth Clinic and March on Main showcase the conference's commitment to engaging the local community, which ties directly to the principles of a partner like Deaconess.”

Linda White, CEO of Deaconess Health System, echoed Naumovich's sentiments.

“Partnering with a group dedicated to physical activity and community engagement is a natural fit for Deaconess,” White said. “As a community health care provider, we seek out ways to encourage tri-state families to get active. This basketball tournament and the associated activities on Main Street will provide our community with a great opportunity for fun and fitness.”

Jason Sands, first-year executive director of the Evansville Sports Corporation, noted that with the Deaconess GLVC Basketball Championship Tournaments preceding the 2014 NCAA Men's Division II Elite Eight, which takes place March 26-29, the Evansville community will witness firsthand a full month of the nation's finest Division II basketball.

“Hosting Championship events is something the City of Evansville takes great pride in,” said Sands. “We plan to provide student athletes, university officials and fans alike with the first-class hospitality we are known for, and create a championship atmosphere like no other.”

The 2014 Deaconess GLVC Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Tournaments will feature 16 seeded teams, including eight men's and eight women's squads that will have earned an invitation following first-round matchups on their respective campuses. On Thursday, March 6, the women's quarterfinals will take place with four games at noon, 2:30 p.m., 6 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. CT. Friday's action will feature the four men's quarterfinal contests at the same times. Both the men's and the women's semifinals will commence on Saturday, March 8, as the women take to the court at noon and 2:30 p.m., followed by the men at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The women's GLVC Champion will be crowned at noon on Sunday, March 9, followed by the men's final at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are currently available at www.ticketmaster.com, charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000, or through the Ford Center Ticket Office.
