The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded big grants to three Indiana cities. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response money will help Terre Haute, Anderson and Hammond hire additional firefighters. January 10, 2014

News Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Donnelly today announced that the fire departments of Anderson, Hammond, and Terre Haute will each receive one of the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants. The departments will receive grant money in the amounts of $1,246,210; $965,046; and $1,537,010 respectively. The grant money will be used to hire additional firefighters for each department.

Donnelly said, “Indiana's firemen and women are some of the bravest and hardest working members of our community. I am proud to see these departments receive the federal support they need. This grant money will help them serve their communities much more safely and efficiently by allowing them to hire additional fire fighters. These men and women put their lives on the line every day, and they deserve our support.”

The SAFER grant program was created to increase the number of trained fire fighters available to communities in need. More information about these competitive grants can be found at http://www.fema.gov/staffing-adequate-fire-emergency-response-grants.
