Indianapolis, Ind. -- Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) reports more than 65,000 customers were affected by Sunday's winter storm, and approximately 26,000 customers remain without power. Heavy snow on trees and power lines is the major cause of the outages.
Due to the current extreme weather conditions, restoration efforts could go into Thursday morning. IPL crews are working around the clock to restore power with the help of mutual assistance crews. A total of 275 neighboring utility workers are expected to help in this effort.
Safety remains IPL's main priority. Customers are asked to check on neighbors, friends and loved ones who may be affected by outages. Those without power should put an emergency plan in place including seeking temporary shelter as forecasts call for extremely cold temperatures tonight and into tomorrow.
