Supports Free Indiana History Text Book and Teacher Training
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) has received a $690,000 grant from Lilly Endowment in support of its state bicentennial efforts, with a focus on school and teacher resources. The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, home of the IHS, is located at 450 W. Ohio St. in downtown Indianapolis.
The Endowment’s grant will play a critical role in helping IHS implement a set of cross-functional educational initiatives – an integral part of IHS's overall plans to prepare Hoosiers of all ages for the celebration of Indiana's bicentennial in 2016.
IHS will provide valuable resources to classrooms, including 33,000 copies of IHS Press’ upcoming book Hoosiers and the American Story designed for grades 8-12, which teach Indiana history and civic literacy and can be used in conjunction with American History textbooks. The grant will also fund nine comprehensive, regional teacher training sessions in 2014, 2015 and 2016 that prepare teachers to optimally utilize the textbook as a supplemental resource in their classrooms.
This grant follows a September 2012 Endowment grant that funded the planning of these educational initiatives. IHS collaborated with Indiana Humanities in developing the plans, and the two organizations will also partner on implementation. Also endorsing the programs are the Indiana Department of Education, Indiana Council for the Social Studies, and the Indiana Bicentennial Commission.
