Governor Mike Pence says his administration will emphasize the importance of “homegrown” businesses and talent to drive the state economy in 2014. He is calling on leaders in the private sector to help draw native Hoosiers that have started companies elsewhere back to the state. During an interview that aired this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television, Pence discussed a proposed talent-attraction fund designed to boost those efforts. He says “most” of the economic growth of the future will come from existing companies.

Pence is proposing that the General Assembly examine quality-of-place initiatives showing success throughout the country and find ways to implement them in smaller and mid-sized communities in Indiana.

He says Indiana would “provide the seed corn” for the towns and cities seeking public-private partners, but local leaders would ultimately develop the vision and planning that will lead to economic growth.
