News Release
Washington — Tomorrow, Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and White House Intergovernmental Affairs Director David Agnew will join Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard at the Monon Community Center in Carmel, Indiana to discuss local work to make the city more resilient to climate change impacts. The Center was built to minimize negative impacts on the environment, including by using surrounding wetlands and other natural sources to filter the building’s water and prevent burdening the City’s stormwater system, and maximizing natural lighting to reduce electricity use.
Supporting state and local efforts to protect communities from the effects of climate change – such as more frequent and severe extreme weather – is an important part of President Obama's Climate Action Plan. In recognition of Mayor Brainard’s leadership in helping Carmel prepare for climate impacts, last month he was named as a part of President Obama’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience to advise the Administration on how the Federal Government can respond to the needs of communities nationwide that are dealing with extreme weather and other climate impacts. The Task Force held its first meeting last week at the White House.
