INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Crossroads of America Council, Boy Scouts of America will host its 18th Annual Governor's Luncheon for Scouting. Governor Mike Pence will serve as the keynote
speaker for the first time while in office.
-Karrie Schlegel, Program Director for Reaching for Tomorrow, will be presented
the Reaching for Tomorrow “Striving for Educational Excellence Achievement
Award” for dedicating her time to helping to educate special needs and at highrisk
kids at Wendell Phillips Elementary IPS #63.
-Talia Broekers of Venture Crew 209 from Edinburgh Lions Club will be awarded
the National Youth Leadership Award. This award recognizes young people who
demonstrate leadership, planning and management skills fostering them to
become responsible adults who can guide community service projects.
-JJ Kubanseck of Troop 256 from St. Barnabas Catholic Church, will be presented
the Firecrafter Award after successfully igniting a fire by friction set. For some
Scouts this battle can take all week but JJ, who has Down Syndrome, completed
this task in just two days.
WHY: The luncheon is the council's main fundraiser for all Scouting programs, including
Scoutreach, which provides Scouting programs for underserved and at-risk youth. Last
year, more than $1.1 million was raised.
WHO: More than 2,000 community leaders including Bob Palmer, vice president of Central
Region FedEx and council president and Mark Miles, president of Hulman & Co. and
event chair.
