A developer has plans to breathe new life into one of downtown Indianapolis' oldest buildings. JHL Properties has already started renovations that will turn the 1830s structure into retail art galleries. The project is expected to be complete next year. December 4, 2013

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis-based real estate company JHL Properties is currently rehabbing the oldest commercial building in the city at 42 East Washington St. along downtown Indianapolis' Cultural Trail. With cooperation and guidance from the Indianapolis Historical Preservation Commission and the Department of Metropolitan Development, JHL Properties plans to return the historic four-story building to an architectural presentation similar to that of the late 1800's.

Certain 19th century features, such as exterior brick from the fa?ade and previously covered window architecture, will be restored and preserved to maintain the building's historical significance. Interior gems are also being retained, including areas of flooring from that time period, various woodwork and brick. The first two floors are being renovated to house a pair of retail art galleries – Gallery Forty-Two and Second Floor Art & Entertainment – while the upper floors will become storage space.

Construction on the property is currently underway with an expected completion date of early February 2014. Both art galleries are schedule to open in the spring of 2014.
