Report: GOP Leaders Call For End of Common Core

Posted: Updated:

The top Republicans in the General Assembly are planning to push for Indiana schools to step away from Common Core standards. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-88) and Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-16) are calling for Indiana to develop its own set of standards. Indiana adopted Common Core in 2010. Implementation of the standards has been "paused" while the legislature takes a closer look.

This summer, a bi-partisan legislative study committee was unable to decide whether the state should move forward.

Many other states are considering separating from Common Core.

The Times reports House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath (D-9) says most Democrats are in favor of Common Core because it allows students to move to different states and stay up-to-date.
