With big box stores and other major retail operations attracting the majority of consumers over the past couple days, small businesses throughout Indiana are hoping to increase their share of holiday shoppers. It is Small Business Saturday. The effort was launched in 2010 and organizers released a study in 2012 that estimates consumer spending on the day at more than $5 billion. News Release

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 25, 2013 — The 2013 holiday shopping season is about to begin. For many small and independent brick-and-mortar establishments around the country, this time is a critical time of year for sales and one that can dramatically improve profit margins. To that end, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is doing its part to encourage consumers to spend the weekend after Thanksgiving, not shopping online or in the “big box” stores, but walking Main Street and shopping small, in support of local and community small businesses.

“Small-business owners contribute to their communities all year long by creating jobs, providing unparalleled products and services, and keeping communities healthy and vibrant,” said NFIB President and CEO Dan Danner. “Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for each of us to give back, to invest some of our hard-earned dollars back into our local and community businesses, and keep Main Street America strong. I encourage every American to shop small this coming Saturday.”

The NFIB helped launch the campaign to “shop small” on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 2010. Since then, millions of Americans have spent billions of dollars in small and independent institutions during the holiday season. This year, NFIB has expanded its efforts to promote Small Business Saturday and to support the men and women of Main Street by:

• Featuring Small Business Saturday deals and discounts for promotion on NFIB.com and NFIB social channels for free. NFIB members and non-members can submit their business information at NFIB.com/shopsmall;

• Dedicating a Pinterest board to Small Business Saturday;

• Re-tweeting photos of small-business owners’ stores from @NFIB; and

• Encouraging shoppers to tweet messages and photos to @NFIB using #ShopSmall on Small Business Saturday.

Research conducted in partnership with American Express found that consumers who were aware of Small Business Saturday spent a total of $5.5 billion with independent merchants that day—higher than earlier estimates of anticipated spending.
