Church Moves Annual Convention
An annual religious gathering is leaving Anderson for the first time in nearly a century. Our partners at The Herald Bulletin report the 2014 Church of God Convention will be held in Oklahoma City. The ministry's general director says a drop in attendance has prompted the move. Jim Lyon tells the newspaper the group has been averaging only 4 percent of the more than 11,000 voting members of the church's General Assembly have been attending recent conventions.
He believes a lack of hotel rooms in Anderson is a key reason for the drop. Lyon says members are no longer willing to stay in campgrounds or at Anderson University dorms.
Anderson will serve as a satellite location for the 2014 event.
