An $11 million plan to redevelop a historic hotel in downtown South Bend could receive tax abatement approval next month. The South Bend Tribune reports the Common Council will discuss additional details of Great Lakes Capital Development's proposal before deciding whether it should be an economic revitalization area. The project could get underway by year's end. Plans call for the 1920s-era building to be transformed for mixed-use, which would include five dozen market-rate apartments.

Monday, the council approved declaration of two revitalization areas in the city's downtown.

One is Mecca Cos. Inc.'s $7.5 million plan to redo an apartment complex near the Indiana University South Bend campus. That project could be complete next year.

The other is a $2.5 million, five-story apartment structure pitched by South Bend-based Matthews LLC. It would connect to the existing East Bank Townhomes.
