Fort Wayne's redevelopment director says keeping BAE Systems in the city will retain hundreds of high-paying, high-skilled jobs. Greg Leatherman says the company plans to make “a real statement” with a proposed $39 million facility near Fort Wayne International Airport that could include more advanced technology. The redevelopment commission has approved $2 million in incentives, dependent on some additional documentation from the company. The $2 million is in addition to $2.5 million in incentives approved by the Allen County-Fort Wayne Capital Improvement Board. Leatherman believes BAE will sign a long-term lease. The move would preserve more than 1,000 jobs.

The aerospace and defense contractor currently operates in a facility owned by General Electric. Last fall, there were fears the company was considering leaving Fort Wayne, possibly for a site in Ohio.
