Hundreds Expected For Life Science Career Fair

Bloomington, Ind. — More than 200 high school students from Monroe County will have the opportunity to learn about jobs in the life sciences sector at a career fair scheduled for Thursday, November 21 at the Indiana Center for the Life Sciences at Ivy Tech Community College – Bloomington. Hosted by The Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce's Franklin Initiative, the Life Sciences Career Fair brings together more than 30 representatives from area life science businesses together to help young people discover the many career options available in the life sciences. The event is free for student attendees and is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the 501 North Parkway location.
Next week’s event marks the third year for the Life Sciences Career Fair which was widely praised by attendees, exhibitors and school officials after last year’s success. Past exhibitors include Cook Medical, Cook Pharmica, Baxter BioPharma Solutions, Boston Scientific, BioConvergence, and Indiana University Heath – Bloomington, as well as pharmacists, optometrists, a forensic detective, and Indiana University researchers.
“Bloomington boasts a thriving life sciences sector that offers so many diverse career opportunities. Our student attendees are often surprised to learn how many career options are available in our community,” said Macy Hughes, Franklin Initiative Manager. “The Life Sciences Career Fair is a great way to connect students with both career options and potential local employers.”
The Chamber's Franklin Initiative objective is to promote career awareness and help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in employment or in continuing education. Hughes adds that the businesses who exhibit at the event take time to not only explain the various jobs available in their business, but also the education and the skill set needed to pursue a specific career. This understanding helps the student to create an achievable career goal and will aid them as they chart their education path to attain that goal.
“This event meshes well with the objective of our organization and the employment needs of our community,” noted Hughes. “To provide this type of experience and opportunity for our community’s young people directly benefits all involved.”
