News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. — Today, Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson appointed Carol Mihalik as Indiana Securities Commissioner. Mihalik will lead the Secretary of State's effort to regulate state securities, which includes enforcing Indiana’s securities laws against white collar criminals, and protecting Hoosiers’ nest eggs by promoting financial education at all stages of life.

“Carol is the perfect blend of tough prosecutor and skilled collaborator for a job that requires much of both,” said Secretary Lawson. “She has been a key player in our pursuit of those who violate securities laws. I know her leadership will continue to move our office forward as we work to protect Hoosier investors.”

Mihalik joined the Secretary of State’s office in 2009 as Associate General Counsel primarily focused on complex securities litigation. In that effort, she helped secure a 54-year conviction of Vaughn Reeves, Sr. of Sullivan County — a church pastor who swindled his members out of investment funds to buy airplanes and other luxuries — and led the investigation of the Indiana State Teachers Association and National Education Association’s alleged securities fraud.

Prior to joining the Secretary of State's office, Mihalik served under two commissioners at the Indiana Department of Insurance. Additionally, she served in the office of the Indiana Attorney General.

“I look forward to focusing my efforts on helping Hoosiers become comfortable and confident with asking questions prior to making investment decisions,” said Commissioner Mihalik. “Our financial literacy efforts will have special emphasis on empowering people to make smart money choices in the first place.”

Mihalik is a registered civil mediator and member of the Indianapolis Bar Association. She is admitted to practice in Indiana state and federal courts as well as the United States Supreme Court. She received her J.D. from the IU School of Law, Indianapolis and a B.S. in Biology from the Pennsylvania State University.

Mihalik is replacing former Securities Commissioner Chris Naylor, who left in October to serve the state as Assistant Executive Director of the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys' Council.
