Merrillville to Host Sports Medicine Conference

Merrillville, Ind. — The American College of Sports Medicine Midwest Chapter will be hosting their annual conference at Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza Nov. 7 and 8. The conference is expected to host between 330 and 350 attendees comprised of professors and researchers, Doctoral/master’s and undergraduate students, as well as clinical professionals.
According to Chapter President Dr. Michael Kushnick, the conference's goal is to disseminate and share knowledge from individual academic and clinical-based research, real-life case findings from sports medicine case reports, research symposia, clinical tutorials of relevant exercise science and clinical applications.
In addition to the symposium and abstracts, the conference will host a clinical keynote speaker as well as a research keynote speaker.
Carrie A. Jaworski, M.D., FAAFO, FACSM, who will be the conference’s clinical keynote speaker, is the Director of the Division of Primary Care Sports Medicine and Sports Medicine Fellowship Director at NorthShore University HealthSystem. Dr. Jaworski is also the vice president of the American College of Sports Medicine and a section author for Current Sports Medicine Reports. Her presentation will be “Exercise and mental health: Finding the right dose.”
George Brooks, Ph. D., FACSM, will be the research keynote speaker. Dr. Brooks is a professor of Integrative Biology at UC, Berkeley. His presentation will be “Forty-four years of research on lactate metabolism in exercise physiology and is not finished!”
Attendees will also be able to explore the exhibition, which will include companies that are prominent in the sports medicine field. Exhibitors include Vacu-Med, Biopac Systems, Inc., ParnoMedics, The National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as others.
The American College of Sports Medicine Midwest Chapter will also be raising money for an organizational contribution to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation through http://fightcf.cff.org/goto/kathystraley. In addition to collecting monetary donations, attendees can purchase t-shirts, window clings and raffle tickets.
The American College of Sports Medicine Midwest Chapter was founded to follow, fulfill and promote, at a regional level, the objectives of the American College of Sports Medicine. The Midwest Chapter includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
