FORT WAYNE, Ind. – By a unanimous vote, the Lutheran Health Network board of directors has chosen Brian Bauer as the network's new chief executive officer. He has served in this position on an interim basis since June. Bauer will also continue in the role of Lutheran Hospital CEO.
“Factors in the board's selection of Brian as CEO included an acknowledgement of his leadership qualities and his ability to connect with individuals on a personal level. In many cases, that has involved getting business and community leaders, elected officials, medical professionals and the general public to rethink what they've always been led to believe about local healthcare,” said Mark King, MD, chairman, Lutheran Health Network board of directors. “His desire to expand access for patients to the highest level of care is matched by his desire to communicate how vitally important Lutheran Health Network is to the economic well-being of the region. Under Brian's leadership, a significant number of minds and doors are being reopened.”
The son of a nurse and the husband of a nurse, Bauer received his undergraduate degree in finance from Butler University in Indianapolis where he played center on the Bulldogs' football team. The leadership skills he honed on and off the field at Butler served him well while earning an MBA, with a healthcare emphasis, at Indiana Wesleyan University during his time as chief executive officer of his hometown hospital in Terre Haute, Ind. Bauer became CEO of LHN's flagship facility in June 2011.
In addition to his outstanding contributions within LHN, Bauer has also represented the interests of the network through extensive community involvement. His selection as the honorary chairperson for northeastern Indiana's March of Dimes' 2012 March for Babies, the National Kidney Foundation's 2012 Kidney Walk and the American Heart Association's 2013 Heart Walk were natural choices for each organization, considering the essential role Lutheran Health Network plays in the delivery of life-changing care for premature infants and patients with kidney and heart disease. In just the past few weeks, Bauer has joined the board of Greater Fort Wayne Inc. and the Region 3 Works Council, a governor-appointed position. During his time as a hospital administrator, Bauer has also worked at the state level as a governor's appointee to advance the effectiveness and utilization of health information technology.
Bauer and his wife are the parents of two sons and are expecting a third child in March.
