As more than 1,000 alumni and friends return to campus for Homecoming Weekend, Earlham College will celebrate the completion of two building projects that represent the early phases of a more than $50 million investment in the future of the institution.
The college community will gather outside Stanley Hall at 4 p.m. Friday to dedicate Stanley and Tyler halls. The ceremony will feature remarks by President David Dawson, Board of Trustees Chair Deborah Hull '67, Associate Professor of Biology Peter Blair and chemistry and mathematics student Dee Ainembabazi '14.
“The $50 million investment in facilities represents the College's commitment to improving the educational experience for students and the tremendous support the College has received from alumni, friends and supporters who want to advance the mission of the institution,” Dawson says. “The investment also reflects the major moves ahead to attract a greater number of students to campus.”
Stanley Hall has been modernized and reconfigured for optimal collaboration between chemistry, biology and biochemistry. Tyler Hall, the college’s new welcome center, combines the home of the college’s financial aid, admissions and marketing and communications operations.
Earlham's revamped facilities will improve Earlham's position as a leading national liberal arts college. U.S. News and World Report recently named Earlham one of 40 “Schools at a Great Price” and ranked Earlham 11th nationally for its commitment to undergraduate teaching.
The major moves include a second phase of the renovation to Stanley, which is slated for completion by August 2015. That phase includes building a three-story addition that attaches to the west end of the existing building to house mathematics, physics, computer science, Wildman Library, social spaces and the Science Center for Integrative Learning.
A third phase will bring geology into the mix, showcase the Joseph Moore Museum and provide a large lecture hall and rooftop research areas, including a rooftop greenhouse.
Meanwhile, construction of the new Center for Visual and Performing Arts is underway on south campus, with an anticipation completion date of fall 2014. The facility will be the central home for the arts at Earlham and will include studio spaces for the visual arts, a state-of-the-art music rehearsal and recital hall, a new music classroom, and a laboratory for all aspects of theatre.
