The city of Indianapolis has announced how nearly $2.5 million in federal grants will be distributed. The funding will support more than 30 local organizations combating issues including unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence.

Indianapolis, Ind. — Mayor Greg Ballard today announced the City of Indianapolis is recommending that more than 30 local organizations receive federal grants totaling more than $2.45 million to help the Indy community confront issues including: unemployment, homelessness, domestic violence and more.

Indy is a city with a big heart,” said Mayor Ballard. “We are fortunate to have a strong network of community and faith-based partners to assist residents of our city in need. I am positive these grants will help our community partners assist our neighbors who are struggling to get back on their feet.”

The largest single grant of $438,480 is being made to EmployIndy, operator Marion County’s WorkOne centers, to help the unemployed through neighborhood based employment programs.

Thirty eight grants are being awarded, totaling $807,968, to organizations that provide shelter, support and assistance programs for the homeless and victims of domestic violence.

Thirteen organizations will receive grants totaling $295,040 to provide neighborhood and housing services to low/moderate income individuals and families.

IU Health and the Damien Center will receive a total of $771,080 in funding to provide assistance, support services and housing information to people with HIV/AIDS.

A grant of $75,600 will go to the Summer Youth Program Fund for youth services helping low/moderate income families.

Finally, the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center and United Way of Central Indiana will share $63,000 in grant funding to provide technical and database assistance to Indianapolis neighborhood groups.

The grants will be administered by the Department of Metropolitan Development, pending City-County Council approval. Funding for the grants come from a variety of federal programs including the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Emergency Solutions Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
