Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann says a new training program will help boost the logistics industry in Wells and surrounding counties. The effort will provide funding for 20 students to receive truck driver training at Ivy Tech Community College.

Bluffton, Ind. — Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann today announced a workforce training program to help supply certified truck drivers for the growing logistics industry in Wells and surrounding counties. In a cooperative effort between the Wells County Economic Development agency, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (Work One) and Ivy Tech State College, funding will be provided to 20 students for truck driver training at Ivy Tech leading to their Commercial Driver License (CDL) certification.

Lieutenant Governor Ellspermann explained, “This program is an excellent example of a workforce training program being developed to meet a specific need of local businesses and then using the resources of Ivy Tech to provide the training. As the Governor’s recently appointed Regional Works Councils begin their work, they will use this same strategy to coordinate business needs with education and training programs throughout the State.”

“I commend Tim Ehlerding and his team at Wells County Economic Development, our staff at Work One, and the Fort Wayne campus of Ivy Tech for their efforts. I am that we will have similar initiatives in all regions of the State in the coming months.”

Joining the Lieutenant Governor for the announcement were Tim Ehlerding, Wells County Economic Development; Jerrilee Mosier, Chancellor, Ivy Tech College Northeast; and Gary Gatman, NE Indiana Regional Workforce Investment Board.

The grants for the CDL training will be awarded by the Department of Workforce Development to cover the $4,000 cost of the CDL training program. Candidates applying for the grant must be unemployed, underemployed or have recently received their GEDs.
