Indiana Feeling Effects of Shutdown

A spokeswoman for Governor Mike Pence confirms it is costing Indiana an additional $33,000 per day. The Kokomo Tribune reports approximately 600 employees at Grissom Air Reserve Base near Peru are on furlough, while the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane says the shutdown will have minimal impact. Christy Denault, communications director with the Office of Governor Mike Pence, says joint programs between the state and federal government including Medicaid and unemployment benefits are covered.
She adds that some programs such as welfare should be covered through the rest of the month.
The Tribune says the cuts at Grissom involve members of the Air Force reserve and some civilians.
NSWC Crane Public Affairs Officer Pamela Ingram tells Inside INdiana Business, “my command, as a working capital fund organization, is not immediately impacted by the shutdown as we are fully funded. Should the shutdown drag on that may change.”
More than 3,000 government employees and more than 1,500 contractors work at the naval center.

In a letter posted to the official Naval Support Activity Crane Facebook page, Naval Support Activity Crane Commanding Officer Jimmy Stewart writes:
“Team Crane,
The following are local impacts as a result of the government shutdown based on responses from Tenant Leadership. Please forward to all hands for widest distribution:
NSA Crane – NSA Crane will continue to provide most of the support services that we normally provide. Specifically:
-Excepted Emergency services (police, fire, and dispatch) will continue as normal, but related administrative functions will not:
-Fire inspections and drills will not be performed during a potential furlough.
-Issuance of hot work permits to NAVFAC and contractors will be delayed.
-MWR/NGIS – minimal impact. Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) MWR and NGIS employees are not directly impacted but all GS MWR employees will be furloughed
-Fitness programs/gyms will operate as normal but if we see less customers we may adjust hours as we progress.
-Eating facilities will remain open as scheduled but if we see less customers we may adjust hours as we progress.
NSWC – Minimal impact. Most NSWC Crane's employees are exempted from furlough. The mission functions of NSWC Crane are expected to continue for the duration of funding availability.
CAAA – There is no immediate impact for CAAA.
DLA – There is no immediate impact to Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Crane at this time.
FLC – Most FLC functions are not impacted. However, due to the government shutdown the Official Mail portion of the Post Office is closed.
Branch Medical – There is no immediate impact to the Branch Health Clinic.
NAVFAC – Public Works will provide their usual products and services.
USCG Detachment – All active duty USCG personnel are to be retained and are to report for duty as normal. USCG Small Arms Repair Facility (SARF) will comply.
NEX – No impact
Commissary – Open 01 October to effect shutdown and to allow patrons to shop if necessary. Closed beginning 02 October for the remainder of the furlough.
CAC / ID Office – Closed for the remainder of the furlough.
