A spokesman for the Indiana Department of Transportation says, regardless of a midnight deadline, the current contract with Amtrak will keep the Hoosier State line going until October 16. Will Wingfield adds negotiations are continuing with the rail corporation and local officials on potential solutions to maintain the passenger service. $3 million of annual federal funding is slated to dry up.

Last week, INDOT released a study that suggests the operating and maintenance costs of keeping the Hoosier State Line running exceed the benefits.

In order to make the route profitable, the study suggests more than $230 million worth of improvements. It offers four route options that plan to expand the service and increase ridership.
