News Release

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. – Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) is pleased to announce the recipients of the company’s second annual Luminary Awards, which recognizes leaders and organizations for their outstanding commitment to strengthening local communities.

The awards were created in 2012, in celebration of the utility’s 100-year anniversary. Luminary Award recipients have demonstrated outstanding commitment in five key areas. The 2013 recipients are:

•Education Award – Linda Woloshansky, The Center of Workforce Innovations

• Environmental Stewardship Award – Goshen College

• Economic Development Award – Holladay Properties

•Emergency Response Award – Michigan City Police and Fire Departments

•Community Leadership Award – William Nangle, The Times of Northwest Indiana

“We are fortunate to have outstanding leaders in northern Indiana,” said NIPSCO CEO Jim Stanley. “This year’s recipients and nominees all serve an important role in the development of our communities and enhancement of our overall quality of life.”

Winners were announced in conjunction with a community reception held Thursday. NIPSCO is also making a $1,000 contribution to each award winner’s charity of choice.

Award Winner Bios

Linda Woloshansky – Education Award

Linda Woloshansky is being recognized for her lifelong dedication to creating a highly skilled and readily available workforce in order to ensure a sustainable economic future for Northwest Indiana. Her career has been focused on improving the educational attainment, workforce viability and economic development of the Region through her countless education initiatives and partnerships with local organizations.

Goshen College – Environmental Stewardship

Goshen College is a private, non-profit college known for its charitable efforts and giving back to the community. By choosing to purchase all its electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, this institution no longer relies on coal, gas or oil to power its campus. This single action will reduce its carbon footprint by nearly 45 percent. As a result, this organization became NIPSCO’s first, major client to go 100 percent green.

Holladay Partners – Economic Development

Holladay Partners, under the leadership of John Phair, have not only been a strong economic development partner, but have continued to be the commercial and industrial development leader across NIPSCO’s service area. They have served as the driving force and developer for numerous upscale residential, hotel, retail and medical center ventures. This team has put northern Indiana on the map with Class A business parks like Ameriplex at Interstate I-80/90, Ameriplex at the Port, Ameriplex at the CrossRoads and the LifeWorks Business Park. Their contributions have brought new investment and thousands of permanent and construction jobs to our communities.

Michigan City Police and Fire Department – Emergency Response

The Michigan City Police and Fire Departments had to use all their training, experience and expertise when they were faced with a terribly difficult situation that ended in the triumphant rescue of six-year-old Nathan Woessner. After falling into, and being buried in, a sink hole at the Mt. Baldy sand dune in Michigan City, these emergency responders, along with the help of countless other individuals, including NIPSCO employees, worked for nearly three hours to save Nathan. It was only through their emergency training, professionalism and leadership under pressure that a success outcome was achieved.

William Nangle – Community Leadership

William Nangle has held strong to the ethical values of professional journalism while serving the public interest for nearly five decades. Through it all, this recipient has worked to bring the big and small news of the Region’s many communities the most important people, the readers. His commitment to strengthen the northwest Indiana region is apparent in the programs he’s founded, fostered, and led – all of which help to solve problems and seize opportunities in our communities.
