INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) today announced the six recipients of the 2013 Governor's Arts Awards.
“I am honored to recognize this year's Governor's Arts Awards recipients for their contributions to the state and the arts,” Pence said. “These talented and passionate Hoosiers strengthen the culture of Indiana through their individual work, commitment to community development, and enthusiasm and support for the arts in their many forms.”
The 2013 recipients of the Indiana Governor's Arts Awards are:
Cristel DeHaan, philanthropist, Indianapolis, IN
Cynthia Hartshorn, music educator, vocalist, Indianapolis, IN
John Hiatt, singer, songwriter, Nashville, TN
Mark Kruzan, mayor, Bloomington, IN
Sydney Pollack, producer, director, actor, Los Angeles, CA (posthumous)
Traditional Arts Indiana, arts organization, Bloomington, IN

“These artists and community leaders are an inspiring presence in the state and demonstrate how the arts enrich everyday life,” Lewis Ricci, executive director of the IAC, said. “It is fitting that on this, the 40th anniversary of the Governor’s Arts Awards, we honor such notable recipients.”
The 2013 Governor's Arts Awards program will mark the 40th anniversary of the awards, and the fourth year the governor and IAC host the event outside the city of Indianapolis. In 2007, the IAC held the awards program in Bloomington, and in 2009, the awards took place in Muncie. The 2011 program took place at the Ernestine M. Raclin School for the Arts on the campus of Indiana University South Bend.
In 2011, Governor Mitch Daniels presented awards to musician and philanthropist June Edwards, South Bend; actor, screenwriter and educator Mark Fauser, Marion; the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, Indianapolis; renowned harpist and music educator Susan McDonald, Bloomington; opera singer and philanthropist Sylvia McNair, Bloomington; and virtuoso pianist Alexander Toradze, South Bend.

Originally conceived in 1973, the biennial awards program honors individuals, organizations, partnerships, businesses and communities that have made significant contributions to the arts in and beyond the confines of Indiana. The awards recognize excellence in artistic achievement, philanthropy, arts education and leadership in the arts, and at the same time build statewide awareness of the important role the arts play in Indiana.
