A funeral will take place Thursday for Westfield City Council Vice President John Dippel. He served on the council since 2007 and is credited with helping the community transition from a town to a city in 2008. Dippel was 73. September 23, 2013

WESTFIELD, Ind. – Westfield City Council Vice President John Dippel passed away Saturday night at IU North Hospital. He lost his battle to cancer at the age of 73. He leaves behind his wife Marcyann, their 5 children, 14 grandchildren and a great grandchild.

John was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He retired from Indiana Bell/Ameritech after 34 years of employment. John served on the Westfield Town Council as well as the City Council since 2007.

John was instrumental in Westfield becoming a city in 2008. He was a member of the Financial Committee and the Westfield Sport Commission, which helped with the planning and implementation of Grand Park.

“John Dippel's dedication and contributions to his beloved city of Westfield will be challenging to chronicle,” says Mayor Andy Cook. “John leaves behind a legacy in Westfield that can’t be replaced.”

Visitation for John Dippel will be held at Saint Maria Goretti Catholic Church on Thursday September 26th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with mass to follow. A memorial will be held to honor John Dippel at 1 p.m. at The Bridgewater Club.
