Martin University has named Eugene White president on an interim basis. He most recently served as superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools. White succeeds George Miller, who announced he was leaving the university last month after about a year on the job. September 18, 2013

FORMER IPS LEADER NAMED INTERIM MARTIN UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Board of Trustees at Martin University announced today that Dr. Eugene G. White, former superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), has been appointed interim president of the Indianapolis-based institution, effective immediately.

Dr. White, who retired from the IPS post in April after seven years on the job, succeeds Dr. George Miller, who announced his resignation at Martin on August 16. Dr. Miller will leave Indianapolis shortly to assume another education position in the south.

As stated by the Board of Trustees, “We are very fortunate that a person with Dr. White's credentials can be available on short notice to assume the key leadership role at Martin. He brings many years of excellent educational experience to the post, including responsibility for the state’s largest K-12 system for seven years.”

The board also said they are grateful for Dr. Miller’s good management of the campus.

Dr. White, a native of Phenix City, Alabama, was named Indiana School Superintendent of the Year in both 2002 and 2009.

Before becoming IPS superintendent in 2005, Dr. White served as superintendent of Washington Township Schools for 11 years. From July 1992 to January 1994, he was deputy superintendent of IPS.

In 1990, he became first African American principal of North Central High School in Indianapolis, serving until 1992. During the 19 years prior, Dr. White was a teacher, coach and school administrator in Fort Wayne Community Schools and was the first African American high school principal ever to serve in that system.

Honored many times over, Dr. White was National Association of Black School Educators Superintendent of the Year in 2007, and in 1992 was named by Redbook magazine a “visionary leader” as principal of one of America’s best schools. He served as president of the American Association of School Administrators in 2006-2007.

He was the first person in his family's history to graduate from high school and excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He was a starting member of the 1966 Alabama state championship basketball team and was awarded a basketball scholarship to Alabama

A & M University, where he graduated with academic honors and set career scoring marks at the school.

In addition to a B.S. degree from Alabama A & M, he holds a 1971 M.S. degree in school health from the University of Tennessee, plus Ed.D. and Ed.S. degrees from Ball State University.

Dr. White is married to Jetties White and has two children: Reginald W. White, vice-principal of Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School, and Kimberly R. White, a teacher and special education specialist at IPS School #14.

Martin University is a private, not-for-profit, liberal arts institution that was founded in 1977 by Rev. Father Boniface Hardin and Sister Jane Schilling. It is steeped in a history of service and open to a diverse population of students from all walks of life.
