The new dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine does not expect IU Health's plan to eliminate 800 positions to have a direct impact on the school's students and faculty. Jay Hess says the school and health care system are mutually-dependent and the job cuts are expected to involve staff. He will be a guest this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television. Hess says IU is one of many health care providers throughout the country attempting to come up with a formula to provide high-quality service at a lower cost. He adds that IU Health remains committed to financially supporting the school of medicine, even as it deals with lower reimbursements and a drop in the number of patients.

Hess says an investment of $75 million into research and education programs over the next five years will not be affected the by the reductions.

He doesn't believe the cuts will have any negative impact on students' education in the short-term and gives them a dose of reality about their chosen career field.
