A Michigan-based company has cleared a hurdle in its proposal to create more than 70 Elkhart jobs. The city council approved an abatement request for Zeeland Lumber and Supply Co. The council passed the request unanimously during a first reading Monday. It's set for a final approval by the council September 23.

Zeeland is looking to invest more than $1 million to upgrade an Elkhart facility and locate new truss-making and delivery operations.

In the request for tax breaks, the company says the new employees could be hired by 2016.
