Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is the top ranked engineering school for the 15th consecutive year. Butler University tops the rankings in the up and coming school category and once again Taylor University has been named top regional college in the Midwest. Notre Dame is 18th, Purdue is 68th and IU is 75th in the national universities rankings.
Ball State University comes in at 181st.
Two universities, Indiana State University and IUPUI were ranked, but not published in the national university category.
The publication ranked many more colleges and universities in the state among the best in several individual categories including strength of certain programs and value.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the fourth consecutive year, Butler University has been ranked the No. 1 “Up and Coming” school in the Midwest in U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges. This ranking recognizes Butler's efforts to make “the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus, or facilities.”
Butler ranks No. 2 overall among Midwest Regional Universities, marking its fifth year in this position and 25th year in the top 10 for this category.
In other categories, Butler finished fourth among Midwest regional universities for its strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and was named one of 31 universities nationwide whose study abroad program contributes significantly to student success. Butler also was listed ninth among Midwest regional universities as a “Best Value School.”
Among top 10 Midwest schools, Butler had the best student-faculty ratio, 11:1. Butler also had the highest alumni giving rate among all Midwest regional universities, 23 percent.
“The findings by U.S. News & World Report underscore Butler's standing as a world-class institution,” President James M. Danko said. “Our faculty is engaged in innovative teaching, we equip our students to be citizens of the world, and we deliver academic excellence at a great value for students and their families. We will continue to build on this success.”
The order of top 10 Regional Universities Midwest schools for 2013 is: Creighton; Butler; Drake; Xavier; Bradley; Valparaiso; John Carroll; Drury; University of Evansville; and Truman State.
To be included in the Regional Universities category, a university must offer a full range of undergraduate degrees and some master’s degree programs, but few, if any, doctoral programs. The universities in this category are ranked in four geographical areas—North, South, Midwest and West.
There are 110 schools ranked in the Midwest, as well as 37 unranked and listed as “second tier.”

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – For the 15th consecutive year, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has been ranked the nation's top undergraduate engineering college. The rankings are determined through an annual survey of America's engineering deans and senior faculty members conducted by U.S. News & World Report for its 2014 Best Colleges guidebook.
In addition to being rated first among colleges that offer the bachelor's or master's as its top degree in engineering, Rose-Hulman is ranked No. 1 by U.S. News in individual programs including: chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. The list includes elite institutions in California, Boston and the nation’s military academies.
“It's certainly another red-letter day in our grand history at Rose-Hulman. Yet delivering the highest-quality engineering education is our definition of daily life on our campus,” said President James C. Conwell, who joined Rose-Hulman in May 2013 as its new president.
“Every day I learn something new here that confirms Rose-Hulman is indeed a place that transforms the lives of the best and the brightest students. It's no surprise to me that Rose-Hulman continues to be viewed at the pinnacle of engineering education by our peers.”
This year's U.S. News & World Report rankings join The Princeton Review's 2014 Best 378 Colleges and the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2014 in recognizing Rose-Hulman’s leadership role in undergraduate engineering, science and mathematics education. Rose-Hulman is also ranked No. 9 among the top 20 “smartest colleges” in America and No. 1 in student memory by Lumosity.
Rose-Hulman's Class of 2013 has a 96.5 percent placement rate with an average starting salary of $65,800. In the past year, Rose-Hulman students have earned prestigious Goldwater, Fulbright and Whitaker honors. Student teams have also competed in international and national computer programming and cyber defense challenges. Looking forward, Rose-Hulman recently welcomed the most diverse freshman class in its history and received a record number of applications from prospective students.
“While many know us for our No. 1 ranking, it's our remarkable career placement rate of nearly 97 percent of our 2013 graduates I want everyone to remember,” continued Conwell. “Our best days are ahead of us.
