FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) has received a major estate gift designated for the Chancellor's discretion. The gift of $365,300 will be the first contribution to a new Honors Program Endowment that will directly support student research, creative inquiry, and intellectual discovery.
“We are honored to receive this major estate gift,” said Chancellor Vicky Carwein. “This gift, which will fund our first-ever Honors Program Endowment, will go a long way in directly supporting student academic experiences as part of this exciting new initiative. This visionary endeavor will increase our academic visibility in northeast Indiana by creating a dynamic, nationally recognized Honors Program. The fund will directly and effectively serve the top talent in our region.”
The Honors Program is currently in the process of being re-imagined and re-organized, a collaborative effort that involves all academic and non-academic units across campus. The Honors Program transition team, which includes Jeff Anderson, vice chancellor for academic affairs; Bob Gillespie, current director of the Honors Program and associate professor of biology; Laurie Bell, executive director for major scholarships and director of the Chapman Scholars program; and Ann Livschiz, associate professor of history, along with the Honors Program Council, are working to develop a revitalized dynamic Honors Program that will center on a challenging and rigorous curriculum, close interaction with peers, mentorship by faculty, and a range of extra-curricular engagement activities matched to students' interests.
The new curriculum will be introduced in fall 2014.
“The gift will provide opportunities for top undergraduate students in northeast Indiana with high-impact, intellectually challenging educational experiences,” said Livschiz. “The richness and impact of an innovative, vibrant Honors Program can elevate an entire university and exponentially impact the northeast Indiana region. These high-achieving students will compete for scholarship opportunities, now possible due to this gift, which are interdisciplinary and will challenge and inspire intellectual exploration.”
Bell added: “These scholarship experiences will provide undergraduate research opportunities, leadership training, study abroad, and internships with industry leaders. The students will aspire to publish in peer reviewed journals, present research at local, regional, and national conferences, and contribute to the cultural and economic development of the region. They will be recognized nationally for outstanding research, leadership, and scholarship and bring national recognition to IPFW and the surrounding region.”
