Two Indiana cities are offering competing proposals aimed at landing a new shipping port. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report East Chicago and Gary are “vigorously pursuing” a potential $400 million project to construct a second Indiana port on Lake Michigan. Plans call for the port to be located at Buffington Harbor, which is adjacent to ArcelorMittal's steel operations.

East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland tells the Times the project “would be economic development at its highest.”

A legislative joint study committee hearing is set for September 12 to examine the proposals.
