INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Now regarded as a bedroom community to Fort Wayne and Kendallville, the small town of Laotto in southeastern Noble County has a distinct history of its own.
It was first established in the 1830s as settlers headed north along the Mongoquinong Trail. Originally named Simon's Corners by the local Postmaster, it became Simonsville, then Grand Rapids Crossing, and finally in 1875 the name “LaOtto” was proposed and petitioned by a local minister and approved by the Noble County commissioners. Now it's known for having its own winery as well as being a destination for paintball enthusiasts.
On Tuesday, August 27, 2013, LaOtto makes a little history again when the 51st Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater Indiana District opens at the LaOtto Marathon, 6467 Merchants Dr.,
LaOtto, IN 46763. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is at 11 a.m. and an open house will follow from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST.
LaOtto is known as the “seven-mile” town because it's about seven miles from Fort Wayne and Kendallville, Laotto Marathon owner Adam Dager feels he's ideally placed for a VPO.
“We're the only gas station and convenience store in town, and our customers will now be able to pick up a book of stamps and postal products when they stop in for milk and bread. They will also be able to drop off their mail here,” he said. “I'm also hoping it will bring an increase in traffic to the store.”
The store is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
The new postal center will be opened by New Haven Postmaster Lisa Curlin. Several USPS and local officials will be present at the event.
In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
