INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The application deadline for Indiana's school voucher program is rapidly approaching – and Hoosier families now have less than two weeks left to apply for this popular educational option. Parents interested in considering the program must act quickly to have all required information submitted prior to the September 1st cut-off date.
To learn more about the voucher program, eligibility guidelines and participating schools, interested parents can visit the School Choice Indiana website. And if eligible for the program, parents should work directly with the participating school of their choice.
“Our goal is to get Hoosier families the information they need to choose the educational option that’s best for their children,” said School Choice Indiana President Betsy Wiley. “Gov. Pence and the Indiana General Assembly want to see all students succeed and we are thrilled to see more low- and middle-income families benefiting from vouchers.”
More than 9,300 students took part in the voucher program across Indiana during the 2012-13 school year, with 289 schools participating. For 2013-14, more than 456 schools are participating in the program.
When parents receive a voucher, the state helps pay for tuition at a private school depending on the family's income. Students qualifying for the federal free-and-reduced lunch program ($43,568 for a family of four) are eligible for a voucher worth up to 90 percent of the state tuition amount for the school district of residence. Children from families who earn up to 150 percent of the free-and-reduced lunch eligibility (around $65,352 for a family of four) can receive a scholarship for up to 50 percent of the state tuition amount.
