Duke Working on Issues at Edwardsport

Posted: Updated:

Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) says it continues to deal with technical glitches as the utility works to bring its $3.5 billion coal gasification plant in southwest Indiana fully online. A spokeswoman says the Edwardsport plant returned to service in early July after a temporary shutdown caused by issues with a water fan. The Duke spokeswoman says technical issues are not unusual with new plants, and says the company has not found anything it expects to affect long-term operations.

The plant began commercial operation in June.

Some consumer and environmental groups opposed the project, saying the funding plan did not offer enough rate protection for consumers. The company reached a settlement with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission on the cost estimate in December.
