Art Museum Earns Warhol Foundation Grant

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts is pleased to announce that the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art has been selected to receive the 2013 Wynn Kramarsky Freedom of Artistic Expression Award. The grant of $50,000 will support programs and exhibitions at the Indianapolis, Indiana art space over the next two years.
Inaugurated in 2006, the annual Wynn Kramarsky Award recognizes the work of organizations with a deep-seated commitment to preserving and defending the First Amendment Rights of artists. Named after the Foundation's former Board Chair, the grant rewards outstanding advocacy, legal, and curatorial efforts on behalf of artists whose rights to free expression have been challenged.
The Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art presents exhibitions that invite audiences to engage with issues relevant to social, political, and artistic discourse today. It takes a strong stand in support of artists whose work pushes boundaries and asks viewers to confront imagery or issues that may fall well outside of their comfort zones. It is the Foundation's belief that iMoCA's commitment to creating a platform for discussion and debate around controversial artwork in its community makes it a vitally important organization in the region and a beacon for freedom of artistic expression nationally.
Since its inception, the Andy Warhol Foundation has sought every opportunity to oppose censorship and support the creative vision of artists. Previous Wynn Kramarsky grantees include the Critical Art Ensemble, Buffalo, NY; National Coalition Against Censorship, New York, NY; QuestionCopyright.org, Stanford, CA; Proteus Fund/Media Democracy Fund, Amherst, MA; and Public Knowledge in Washington, D.C. The Foundation is proud to include the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art in this list and looks forward to a bold slate of exhibition programming from them in the years to come.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was established in 1987. In accordance with Andy Warhol's will, its mission is the advancement of the visual arts. The Foundation's objective is to foster innovative artistic expression and the creative process by encouraging and supporting cultural organizations that in turn, directly or indirectly, support artists and their work. The Foundation values the contribution these organizations make to artists and audiences and to society as a whole by supporting, exhibiting and interpreting a broad spectrum of contemporary artistic practice.
