INDIANAPOLIS (July 18, 2013) – Central Indiana employers will be at the opening day of practice of the Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard for Career Day @ the Brickyard, an event sponsored by the City of Indianapolis and EmployIndy as part of an ongoing effort to match skilled job seekers with technical career opportunities.
The event will take place on Thursday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and is open to the public free of charge. Geared toward residents in search of a career in a technical field, Career Day @ the Brickyard will include employers from both medium- and large-size companies looking to fill jobs with skilled workers, such as mechanical and manufacturing engineers, software systems analysts, IT managers and laboratory technicians.
“The good news is that there are thousands of jobs open in Central Indiana for workers with technical skills, and those jobs pay high wages,” said Brooke Huntington, president and CEO of EmployIndy, Marion County’s local workforce development organization dedicated to advancing workforce solutions for Indianapolis. “The challenge is finding the right people, with the right skills and qualifications, such as a one-year post high school certificate, two-year degree or four-year degree. Career Day @ the Brickyard is an event that will enable Central Indiana companies and residents to meet and begin to close the skills gap.”
Data show that there are about 19,000 jobs posted each year for technical positions in Central Indiana in industries that will grow Central Indiana’s economy, such a healthcare, life sciences, information technology, advanced manufacturing and logistics.
“We are tackling the skills gap issue in Central Indiana head-on,” said Mayor Ballard. “I have assembled a group of business, civic, philanthropic and industry-sector leaders to join Hire Up Indy to develop real solutions for Central Indiana companies in search of skilled technical talent and pathways for residents to receive the education and credentials they need to succeed in a career with technically oriented industries.”
Career Day @ the Brickyard is geared specifically to help match skilled workers with technical jobs at Central Indiana companies. It is an initial step in a comprehensive regional plan to bring employers and job seekers together to fill jobs and build careers.
Career Day @ the Brickyard will be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Plaza, which can be accessed through Gate 6 from Georgetown Road. Job seekers will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from companies such as EnerDel, Covance, and Venture Logistics, learn about job opportunities and, in some instances, participate in job interviews. In addition, WorkOne Indianapolis staff will be on-site to offer information about WorkOne services, assist job seekers with resumes and hold an open computer lab for resume updates.
