City leaders have unveiled renderings of a $2 million Legacy Fort Wayne project. The McMillen Park Community Center will offer recreational, educational and fitness programs. The project is expected to be complete next year.

Fort Wayne, Ind. — Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, City Councilman Glynn Hines and Parks & Recreation Director Al Moll were joined by MSKTD and Associates today to unveil the renderings of the McMillen Park Community Center, a Legacy Fort Wayne project.

The public is invited to view the renderings at 6 p.m. Monday, July 22 at the former McMillen Ice Arena, 3901 Abbott St.

The community center will feature programs for all ages that will include sports and recreation as well as educational, social, and health and fitness programs. MSKTD and Associates are responsible for all design necessary for bidding the construction work and will handle project management through completion. This will be Phase 1 of the project. Additional phases will be needed to complete the renovation.

“This project is going to have a transformational impact on our community,” said Mayor Henry. “We're going to fill a real need in our Parks system. The McMillen Community Center will benefit children and adults and make a meaningful, lasting difference in our City. Investing in ourselves will position us for future growth and success.”

The invitation for construction bids will be issued on July 23.

To ensure the future McMillen facility would meet the community's ongoing needs, the Parks & Recreation Department held public meetings in spring 2011 to gather ideas. A conceptual drawing derived from the public's feedback was presented to the community in August 2011.

This Legacy Fort Wayne project is expected to be complete in 2014 at an approximate cost of $2 million.

Legacy Fort Wayne was created by proceeds from the sale of the City Light Utility to Indiana Michigan Power and its funds are being used to create transformational change in the community.
