Lawmakers to Examine IPFW Future

InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report

A legislative committee is expected to discuss the possibility of IPFW becoming an independent university. Our partners at Indiana's NewsCenter report the study committee on education is scheduled to talk about the idea next month. Options include changing the school to Fort Wayne University or Fort Wayne State University.

That could lead to an operation which would still be affiliated with Purdue University and Indiana University.

Another idea is for IPFW to make a complete break from the other institutions.

Committee Co-chair, State Senator Dennis Kruse (R-14) tells INC the recent retirement of Chancellor Michael Wartell is one of the factors leading to the discussions.

He says Wartell was forced out of office once he reached 65, which is a mandatory retirement age for senior administrators at Purdue.

The university has made exceptions in the past, but decided against such a move for Wartell.

Many of IPFW's financial and employment functions are handled at Purdue's main campus in West Lafayette.

Kruse tells our partners he would like to see more local control, but understands part of the appeal of IPFW is the opportunity to receive a degree from Purdue or IU.
