WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The fall conference of the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering next week will focus on two key issues in the nation's health-care delivery system - care coordination and population health.

Transforming Healthcare Delivery: Care Coordination and Population Health will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 29) at The Trails, 325 Burnett Road in West Lafayette. Care coordination will be featured during the morning, while the afternoon's focus is population health.

"These are both areas in which we have a great opportunity to rethink how we deliver care and make a noticeable difference in the health-care system," said Steve Witz, director of the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering in Discovery Park. "These two topics were selected based on Regenstrief's research strengths and participant feedback at our spring conference."

By improving care coordination, the nation can improve overall health outcomes, particularly for those patients who may be seeing a primary care doctor and a specialist, Witz said. The goal of population health is to understand and improve health outcomes of an entire group, rather than focusing on an individual. One way of achieving this is to reduce health inequities, he said.

Conference participants include Georgia Institute of Technology's Health Systems Institute, University of Arkansas for Medical Science and North Carolina State University. Practitioner and industry group Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts also is represented.

The one-day conference, provided in collaboration with the Healthcare Engineering Alliance, is free, but registration is required by Thursday (Sept. 24) at http://www.purdue.edu/rche/events/conferenceregistration.php. After that date, contact Mary Schultz at schultm@purdue.edu about space availability. Faculty who wish to bring their classes also should contact Schultz.

Free shuttles to and from the Purdue Memorial Union will be provided during the day. Breakfast and lunch also will be provided.
