Ivy Tech says 110,359 students enrolled statewide for classes Monday. The college’s total headcount is up 28.6 percent compared to the first day of classes last Fall semester.

Ivy Tech announced earlier this month that it's fall enrollment was up 24 percent from last year and increasing at the rate of 2,000 students per day.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ivy Tech Community College continues to post record enrollment numbers. With 110,359 students enrolled statewide for classes on Monday, Ivy Tech’s total headcount is up 28.6 percent compared to the first day of classes last Fall semester.

The state’s community college saw an increase of more than 24,560 additional students enroll this Fall semester as compared to last Fall. Each of Ivy Tech’s 14 regions across the state experienced growth.

Ivy Tech has been able to accommodate the enrollment increase, which is larger than the total enrollment of Indiana State University or Ball State University, from the implementation of a number of cost savings measures and capitalizing on the efficiencies as one statewide community college system.

“This is a tremendous success story,” Ivy Tech Community College President Thomas J. Snyder said. “The fact that we were able to accommodate this growth with funding from our state appropriations combined with our cost savings and efficiencies and still keep tuition affordable is phenomenal. The dedication of our faculty and staff to help change the lives of so many students via the community college is a story that is continuing to get noticed, not just here in Indiana, but around the country.”

Ivy Tech was able to hire 80 additional faculty members, as well as 20 additional student services positions statewide to assist in handling the growth. The Community College was also able to increase its number of classes offered by nearly 10 to 15 percent and more than 83 percent of all classes reached or exceeded full capacity. Ivy Tech is seeing its highest building utilization in history.

“We planned for this growth for the last year and that planning is proving to be a difference maker this semester. We implemented a new student information system, a new bookstore operation and implemented the recommendations of a variety of process improvement teams to ensure we could handle our growth without significant additional overhead and while continuing to keep tuition affordable,” Snyder said. “We have filled nearly every seat in every class. In some areas of the state the growth is outpacing our ability to find space or staff to offer additional class sections and we will continue to face challenges in the future as we do not expect this growth trend to end very soon.”

Ivy Tech estimates that approximately 8,000-10,000 students who have registered for the Fall term were not able to get their desired class schedules.
